I started Granada Hills Appliance Repair in 1989 with a toolbox and a beat-up pickup truck. I’d grown up in the San Fernando Valley, and my father was a maintenance man for an apartment complex in North Hollywood. By the time I was fourteen, I could tear down a Kenmore washer and put it back together blindfolded. Appliances just made sense to me the way engines make sense to some people.
After high school I went to work for one of the big national warranty companies. The pay was fine, but the model was broken — rush in, swap a part, rush out. Half the time the real problem was something else entirely, and the customer would be calling back a week later. I couldn’t work that way. When a neighbor in Granada Hills asked me to look at her Maytag dryer on a Saturday, I fixed it properly in forty-five minutes. She told her sister, her sister told the HOA, and by Monday I had six calls waiting.
That was thirty-six years ago. My wife handled the books and the phone for the first decade. My son grew up riding along on service calls and now runs his own crew. We’ve repaired over 50,000 appliances across Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, and every neighborhood in between. We still answer our own phones. We still show up on time. And we still won’t leave until the job is done right.
