Preparing Your Appliances for San Fernando Valley Summer Heat

Anyone who has lived through a San Fernando Valley summer knows the drill: triple-digit heat, bone-dry air, and utility bills that make you wince. What most homeowners do not realize is that extreme heat puts enormous stress on your household appliances — and a little preventive maintenance now can save you from an expensive emergency repair in July or August.

After 36 years of repairing appliances across Granada Hills, Porter Ranch, Chatsworth, and the entire northwest Valley, we see the same summer breakdowns every year. Here is how to prevent them.

Refrigerators: The #1 Summer Casualty

Your refrigerator works harder in the summer than any other time of year, especially in kitchens without air conditioning or in garages (a common setup in Granada Hills and Porter Ranch homes). When the ambient temperature rises, the compressor runs longer and harder to maintain internal temperatures.

What to do now:

  • Clean the condenser coils. Pull the fridge away from the wall and vacuum the coils on the back or bottom. Dust-covered coils make the compressor work 20-30% harder. We see this cause compressor failures every summer in Valley homes.
  • Check the door seals. Close the door on a dollar bill — if you can pull it out easily, the seal is worn and your fridge is leaking cold air. Replacement seals are inexpensive and make a real difference.
  • Set the temperature correctly. The fridge should be 37-38°F, the freezer at 0°F. Many homeowners crank it colder thinking it helps — it actually makes the compressor cycle more aggressively and can lead to premature failure.
  • Clear space around the unit. Your refrigerator needs airflow to dissipate heat. If it is sandwiched between cabinets with no gap, the compressor will overheat. Leave at least two inches on each side and four inches behind.

Washers and Dryers: Prevent Overheating

Summer laundry loads tend to increase — swimsuits, towels, outdoor clothes. That extra volume can push washers and dryers past their comfort zone.

Washing machines:

  • Inspect the inlet hoses. Rubber hoses degrade faster in Valley heat. If yours are original to the machine and more than five years old, replace them with braided stainless steel hoses. We see burst hoses cause water damage in Valley homes every summer.
  • Clean the lint trap and drain pump filter. A clogged drain pump makes the motor work harder and can cause overheating shutdowns.
  • Leave the door open between loads. This prevents mold and mildew buildup, which is less common in our dry climate but still happens in front-loaders.

Dryers:

  • Clean the vent duct. This is the single most important maintenance task for any dryer. A clogged vent duct causes the dryer to overheat, trip the thermal fuse, and potentially start a fire. We recommend cleaning the full duct run — from the dryer to the exterior vent — at least once a year.
  • Check the exterior vent flap. Make sure it opens freely and is not blocked by lint, bird nests, or debris. Walk outside and check it while the dryer is running.

Dishwashers: Water Temperature Matters

In summer, Valley tap water can come out of the pipes quite warm — which is actually good for your dishwasher. But there are still things to watch:

  • Run hot water at the sink before starting the dishwasher. This ensures the first fill cycle gets hot water immediately rather than lukewarm water sitting in the pipes.
  • Clean the spray arms. Hard water mineral buildup in the spray arm jets is the most common cause of poor cleaning performance. Remove the spray arms and soak them in white vinegar for an hour.
  • Run a cleaning cycle monthly. Use a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar on the top rack with an empty hot cycle. This dissolves grease and mineral buildup.

Ovens and Stoves: Keep Them Clean

You might use the oven less in summer, which actually makes it the perfect time for maintenance:

  • Run the self-clean cycle now — before the heat hits. Self-clean cycles raise the oven to 800-900°F, which puts stress on door seals and igniters. Better to do this in March than in August when your kitchen is already sweltering.
  • Check gas burner igniters. If a burner takes more than a few seconds to ignite, or you hear clicking without flame, the igniter may be dirty or failing. Clean around the igniter with a soft brush.

When to Call a Professional

Preventive maintenance goes a long way, but some issues need a trained technician:

  • Refrigerator compressor running constantly but not cooling adequately
  • Washer vibrating excessively or making grinding noises
  • Dryer taking two or more cycles to dry a normal load
  • Dishwasher not draining completely
  • Gas smell near any appliance (call the gas company first, then call us)
